The Danse Macabre scene
The Five Quarters
A swashbuckling Middle Grade adventure series
Written by Jessi Seguin and Illustrated and designed by myself

This is by far the funniest and most well-written series I have ever read, let alone had the honour to illustrate. Here are some snippets from books 1-3.
Packshot of books 1 to 3
Book 1: Oddities at the Outset
The Regal has spared no expense or effort to make sure it goes off without a hitch.
Famous last words.
In an act of derring-do, a Man Wearing Black swoops in on the back of a dragon and steals The Box of Antiquities before the very eyes of The Regal, The Vice Regals, and all the gathered citizens of The Five Quarters. Without it and the symbols of The Five Quarters that it contains, there can be no Anointing.
Now it’s up to Chase Fontaine – an Elite boy in search of glory – and Rose CCXIX – a foundling trapeze artist who needs the reward money to keep her Circus alive – to find and bring back The Box of Antiquities.
Well, them and the other three cutthroat (and grownup!) teams granted Temporary Treasure Hunting Licenses.
The race is on…

Working with Patricia was an absolute delight. I cannot say enough about how amazingly talented and considered she is in her work. Her attention to detail that she pulled out of the writing I gave her was so gratifying. She was clear in her intentions and followed through, with bells on. High recommend.

Book 2: Anomalies in the Air
Safely aboard The Endless Wonder – captained by a notorious Pirate, so hardly safe – Chase and Rose set sail to bring back The Box of Antiquities. Only slightly hampered by having Vice Regal Evangeline and her Bodyguard in tow – though it is a great honour, of course.
On advice from an unexpected source, Rose insists they head for The First Quarter – even though Chase worked very hard to chart quite a different course.
Once there, Guidance comes from everyone they encounter. However, it can be hard to tell friends from foes…

My favourite bit of this collaboration was when Patsy asked me if the wish fountain she had drawn worked as I imagined and how she had spent a while considering the logistics. This is an excellent example of the attention to detail and care she has given my project, all aspect so it. Don't hesitate to choose her; she's awesome.

Book 3: Ghastlyness on the Ground
Armed with their first real clue, Chase and Rose sail off to The Second Quarter – with wreckage in their wake and a new companion on board. Honestly, who risks the wrath of pirates simply because he wanted something to do?
Once there, they are greeted by secrets, sugar, and the stuff of nightmares. Even the promise of Safe Passage is not enough to protect them from the perils that wait around every corner.
When the twists and turns are too numerous to count, it can be hard not to get caught up in the dance…

This is my third collaboration with Patsy and she is one of the best decisions I made. She's consistently detailed, takes such care to bring my story to life through her exquisite drawings, timely and communicative, and so kind. I really can't recommend her highly enough.
